Birthday-Dress

Traditions are a tricky thing..no matter how young or old they are.
Should you stick to them in the same way all the time? make a few changes? define a strict way of soing things? go ahead and newly decide how to do it every time?
not so easy…

For birthdays, for example, we have certain things that are just set and needed. Things that are part of these special days. and for the kids, getting a birthday-Shirt is part of these things just as a birthday cake is.

Mission für dieses Jahr also: a Birthday dress. Nicht irgendein Kleid! Ein DREHKleid, bitteschön.
…ok….

Until they were three I made these birthday-Shirts according to what I wanted.
From his 4th birthday on my son got to tell me what he would like (partially because for some reason it is at this age that they just don’t wear everything mommy picks for them anymore).
This lead to some major projects (huge applicqué-checklist here, very destinct applicque-wish here and a desired cutting file here)

The little miss didn’t get a classic „shirt“ for her 3rd birthday. I went ahead and changed this tradition a wee bit and made her a birthday tunic (here)
She loved it! And wore it until just a few days before her 4th birthday..

And now our little princess is having her fourth birthday. And since I already softened up said shirt-tradition into a tunic…well.. of course it’s NOT going to be a shirt this year. What whas I thinking?!
Unfortunately, a tunic is not anywheres near majestic enough though, either!
Luckily I have children who can put their wishes into very clear, hardly misunderstandable orders.
So this year’s mission is: a birthday dress! not just any dress…one, that flows and turns really well.
…uhm…ok.

So I ordered a pattern (Elodie by Farbenmix) and a variety of fabric combinations…
let our princess choose..
and this was to be it:

Gosh, you can not imagine how excited I was!
A real dress!
a „wow“ kind of dress. With a turning skirt to it!
We haven’t had one of these here yet and the little girl in me was really looking forward to this..
..eventhough sewing cotton fabric and having to iron every few minutes is definitely NOT my favorite kind of sewing…

Of course part of said tradition is that the age is somewhere on the garment – quite a challenge in this case, which I solved with brooch-like applicqué.

und, was soll ich sagen?
Ich bin wirklich stolz auf das Ergebnis.
Sooooo schön!
Oder?
Mal ehrlich!

and, you know what?
I’m really proud of the result.
Sooooo beautiful!
Isn’t it?
I mean…really?!

Ich bin wirklich ganz verliebt.
So.
Vom glücklichen Prinzesschen in diesem wunderschönen Kleid?

Jo..

muss ich es aussprechen /-schreiben?
SIE TRÄGT ES NICHT.

I’m really absolutely in love with it.
… and the instagramm-people among us already know all these pictures and are beginning to ask themselves, why there aren’t any new ones? …any better ones?…
and the blog-readers are just asking themselves: Where are the pictures of the little happy princess wearing this lovely dress?
Where are the outside pictures from different angles?
Of the skirt-part of the dress flowing and turning beautifully?
..the weather is good enough…?

well..

..do I have to spell it out?
SHE WON’T WEAR IT.

So. Ende.
Tja. So kann’s gehen.
Wäre ich mal bei Shirts geblieben…. 😉

So that’s the end of this story, really.
She won’t wear it.
She had it on once. spun around a few times, had a blast, loved it – but then preferred to put on her Elsa-costume. And she’s never wanted to put this one on since (and that was the beginning of March, by the way).
I don’t know if the gathered neckline or sleeves bother her ?
Or wether she doesn’t like the colors anymore…now that they’re on a dress?
Or wether it’s too tight or too loose in some corner?
I really have no idea.
But she won’t wear it.
so it goes.
I should have stuck to shirts… 😉
