Dragon costume Sew Along – 1- HEAD

Was Ihr braucht, findet Ihr in diesem Post.
Fotos des fertigen Kostüms findet Ihr in diesem Post

Here goes the first part of our Toothless costume!
We’ll be turning the hood of your hoodie into the head.
A list of what you need is in this blog post.
Pics of the finished costume are in this post

1)

So, here we go!
First, we’ll give our dragon a few scales.
This step is pretty easy to do if you’ve got a cutting machine and heat transfer material.
If you don’t, you can color the scales onto your Hoodie with black fabric paint.
Or you can just skip this step.

I drew some scales for our dragon and used black heat transfer material.
You can get a scan of my drawing that you can use to create a cutting file with your machines software in my shop, as well as ready to iron on scales  – both for personal use only.

place some scales along the edge of your Hood and place the nostrils and the nose and forehead scales in the middle.
I cut into the carrier lenthwise from the top to about the center of the scales in order to place them on the left and right of my hood’s middle seam.

2)

You can download my pattern drawings HERE – for personal use only!
There’s a pattern for the eyes on one of the pages.

I made the eyes more yellowish close to the pupils and more green towards the outside. It looks pretty much like the original like this.
If you want, you can add a touch of blue and white underneath the nostrils. This is what our favorite dragon looks like just before spitting/firing his what-ever-it-is 😉

3)

If you’re in a hurry you might want to drop this step:
Head spikes.

Cut the head spikes from my pattern 1x from black SnapPap.
I crumple it up and twist it around a bit first, to give it that leather look and make it softer and easier to handle.
Alternatively you could cut 2 from black fabric (I’d fuse something on it to reinforce it though), sew them together and then turn right side out.

Now open up the middle seam of your hood just as much as you need to to fit in those spikes.
Then sew the spikes into the seam using a needle and ladder stitch, and poking through the SnapPap on every stitch so the spikes don’t come back out. I thimble is a good thing to have 😉

4)

Now all the head is missing is horns!
Cut horns 1-4 twice each from a double layer of black fabric.
Sew together 2 matching parts of each horn, right sides facing. Leave the horn base open!
Turn and stuff with batting, cotton or fabric scraps.
Ladder stitch horns onto your hood: from the middle toward the outside on each side: 1,2,3,4
(I’m still doing that…I’ll post pics as soon as I’m done 😉

Bis dann, beim 2. Teil!

That’s it for today!
Although you could start cutting the tail and wing parts according to the pattern already, for tomorrow 😉
See you in part 2!

EDIT:
:-*UPDATE:
There is now also a lightfury living with us 🙂
Several people have asked me, how they can show their appreciation for my free tutorials or patterns or how you can support my work. The fact that I receive these kind of questions alone, makes me really happy. Thank you for that!
Anyway, I thought I’d take the opportunity to post a quick answer to that here today.
There are several ways to do so:
– You can subscribe to my Youtube channel: https://goo.gl/VtkPxE
– You can LIKE mommymade’s facebook page: www.facebook.com/mommymadeDIY
Higher numbers of followers always enhance mommymade’s reach, which is very helpful
– On both platforms you can help by „like“ing mommymade posts that you like, or marking them with a heart or a laughing smilee. Specially on facebook that really helps when it comes to visibility and reach.
– You can buy materials you need for making something you found a mommymade-tutorial for by using an Affiliate Link or by clicking on a shop’s banner ad on my blog. I receive a small commission for sales made through said links or banner ads. The prices you pay for items bought through one of these links is no different to the prices you’d pay when accessing these webshops by tiping the URL into your browser.
– and, if you wish to do so, you can send me a small donation through Paypal. So if you liked one of my tutorials here or on youtube, if my instructions helped you with one of your projects, if you’ve used one of my Freebies to make something wonderful that you kid loves and that got you a lot of „uuuh“s and „aaah“s, and you want to show your appreciation and support my work – I’m very happy about any one of said forms of support. And of course am always thankful for emails, pictures and / or Links to my pages on facebook or Instagram.
Thank you very much! :-*

nochmal EDIT:
Mittlerweile gibt es ein Videotutorial zum Kostüm!
