Pony tail hat, beanie, twisted hat, magic beanie, loop scraf, buff, head band….this thing has so many different names, I can’t even write them all down 😀
And they’re all correct! Even connecting all of them into one long name would be right. Because it’s a beanie hat with a twist…that you can stick your ponytail through. Or you can pull the whole thing open and wear it as a scarf…or a headband.
When my daughter got my first version, she immediately called it: twist & shake beanie. So that’s what we call it now.

One accessory – many options. And: it’s a quick sew that doesn’t require a sewing pattern!

All you need is:
– a measuring tape to measure your head circumference
– a stretchy fabric such as Jersey (or other knits. I used the beautiful knit I already used for my convertible scarf with sleeves. You’ll be able to buy that in my shop very soon!). Your piece of fabric needs to be as wide as your head circumference and 45-55cm high.
– Sewing clips and your sewing machine (and a hand needle and thread to stitch up the opening at the end).

Here’s the tutorial – I’ve added English captions / subtitles to my video. If you want the tutorial in English, hit the CC button at the bottom of the video. If you get German subtitles, choose the language of the subtitles by clicking onto the gear wheel icon next to the CC-Button 😉

I’ve been getting many of the same questions to this tutorial, specially when it comes to sewing a twisted beanie from 2 different fabrics or using a fabric that has a pattern on it. I’ve put together a video answering these FAQ for you here:

To complete the outfit you see in the video, of yourse, you need a matching sleeve scarf!
Here’s how to sew your own sleeve scarf:
