Dragon costume Sew Along – 3 – WINGS

Woohooo! Letzter Teil!

Woohoo! Last Part!
We’ll have our costume finished today!!
If you just found your way here today, here and here is what we’ve done so far.

Heute also die großen Rückenflügel.

Today we’ll be making the back wings.
I don’t have a printable pattern for you but would instead like to show you, how to make wings that fit, based on your Hoodie.

MY plan was to make the wings from black SnapPap (the same way I made the tail wings); to add shoulder straps, sew a tunnel along the top edge and put in some wire to be able to shape the wings better, and to have them sort of stand up off the dragon’s back.
That was my plan.
That’s why the shopping list says you need a whole sheet of black SnapPap….
But sometimes things change…and the little person I’m making my Toothless costume for want wings he can „fly“ with.
Understandable – and that’s why I’ve made a quick change.

The SnapPap-Version will definitely work the way I outlined above… but my step-by-step instructions will now be for wings made of fabric, that you can flap and soar with.
You will therefore need:
– approx.1m of black fabric (1,10m -1,20m if you want to be on the safe side for kids bigger than 116cm).
– if you want: some batting (but you can make them fabric-only, too).
– about 20cm of black elastic band
– 2 black Snaps if you want to connect your wings to your hoodie with snaps OR: more black elastic band to make shoulder straps.

HIER DAS VIDEOTUTORIAL ZUM KOSTÜM:

1).

Place your fabric in front of you (the way you bought it: folded to a double layer, the fold on the left) and place your hoodie on it, zipper on fabric fold.
With a chalk pencil or fabric marker make 3 marks:
– shoulder (where the hood starts)
– End of back (where cuff starts)
– End of sleeve (where cuff starts)

2)

Remove the hoodie and sketch out this shape in between your 3 marks
I connect the shoulder and sleeve mark first. (I drew past that sleeve mark on purpose because I don’t want my son to tell me he’s outgrown his wings already next month) Then I connect the sleeve markt to the bottom mark with curved lines. Next, I connect both the shoulder an bottom mark to the fabric fold. Make sure your draw downwards from the shoulder mark, as you would for a neckline.
In the end I make those top-to-bottom connections…but you don’t really have to make these at this point.

3)

Cut your wing out, adding a 1cm seam allowance.
Place your cut out (folded) wing on the rest of your black fabric, fold on fold and cut a second, identical wing.
If you want to add batting, cut out the same shape from batting. Fabric-only wings work just finde though, too!
unfold your wings, layer them right sides facing (if you have batting, place that on top), and then stitch together along the outlines (sticking to your 1cm seam allowance). Make sure to leave an opening at the top of your wing, from shoulder to shoulder!

4)

Trim your seam allowance at the tips and make little parallel cuts into it in the curves.
Turn your wing right side out and shape all the tips (e.g. using a chopstick)

5)

Decide which side will be your wing’s outside and inside.
If you want to connect the wing to your hoodie with snaps, attach a stud-piece on each shoulder on the wing’s inside (going in through the opening).

6)
Schließt die Wendeöffnung.

Close the opening at the top of the wings.

7)

Top-stitch along the top of the wing approx. 1,5 – 2cm from the edge.
If you want, draw the lines for the next step onto the inside of your wing with chalk.

8)

Top-stitch the remaining lines.
You can do this by simply stitching along the lines once, or by making 2 parallel seams.
I made two because I felt it made more of a wing bone impression.
[yes, I lost one of the wing’s tips and bones in this whole process… simply didn’t fully shape it after turning the wing right side out… I noticed and fixed that at some point 😉 ]

9)

Attach an elastic band to the inside of each of the outer wing tips.
Now all you’re missing is snaps on the hoodie shoulders (the socket piececs of the snaps), and your Toothless is ready to fly!

I hope this tutorial helps you turn your kids (or yourself) into little Toothless Dragons.
I’m sure this wing tutorial might come in handy for other dragons, too – or batman…or bats…or without the wing tips for any other flying creatures.

Leave a comment, let me know your ideas and questions and maybe leave a „like“ on facebook !
And if you’d like, send me some pictures of your dragons or link „mommymadeDIY“ to your fb posts so I can see the pictures.

I’ll be posting pictures of my complete Toothless within the next days 😉
Here they are!

EDIT:
:-*UPDATE:
There is now also a lightfury living with us
Several people have asked me, how they can show their appreciation for my free tutorials or patterns or how you can support my work. The fact that I receive these kind of questions alone, makes me really happy. Thank you for that!
Anyway, I thought I’d take the opportunity to post a quick answer to that here today.
There are several ways to do so:
– You can subscribe to my Youtube channel: https://goo.gl/VtkPxE
– You can LIKE mommymade’s facebook page: www.facebook.com/mommymadeDIY
Higher numbers of followers always enhance mommymade’s reach, which is very helpful
– On both platforms you can help by „like“ing mommymade posts that you like, or marking them with a heart or a laughing smilee. Specially on facebook that really helps when it comes to visibility and reach.
– You can buy materials you need for making something you found a mommymade-tutorial for by using an Affiliate Link or by clicking on a shop’s banner ad on my blog. I receive a small commission for sales made through said links or banner ads. The prices you pay for items bought through one of these links is no different to the prices you’d pay when accessing these webshops by tiping the URL into your browser.
– and, if you wish to do so, you can send me a small donation through Paypal.

So if you liked one of my tutorials here or on youtube, if my instructions helped you with one of your projects, if you’ve used one of my Freebies to make something wonderful that you kid loves and that got you a lot of „uuuh“s and „aaah“s, and you want to show your appreciation and support my work – I’m very happy about any one of said forms of support. And of course am always thankful for emails, pictures and / or Links to my pages on facebook or Instagram.
Thank you very much! :-*

Nochmal EDIT:
Mittlerweile gibt es ein Videotutorial zum Kostüm!
