Ja, is klar.
„you can sew one!“

My son is now part of what I believe Americans would refer to as kindergarten  – his last year before 1st grade. It’s a bit confusing, because we say „kindergarten“ to the nursery school they all go to from age 3 until they enter primary school here. And the last year of THAT is referred to here as „Vorschule“ although it’s not anything other than the same group they’ve been going to, not some new place, only now they’re „Vorschul“-Kids and basically theachers start doing all kinds of exercises with the 5-year olds in order to prepare them for school.
To make a long story short: My son is now part of just that and he’s reeeeaaalllly proud!
And he now needs a pencil case to bring along to kindergarten, with colored pencils, markers, a pencil, an eraser and a sharpener.
The first thing he said was: „I want a turquoise one with dinosaurs on it“.
uhm, sure. And what he answered to my „they might not have one just like that downtown…“, was: „you can sew one!“ with a bright smile on his face.
Well… theoretically he’s right, of course…
And when it turned out our local fabric store actually had turquise-ish fabric with dinosaurs, there was no way I was gonna get out of this 😉

After some research I decided to use a pattern by Kreativlabor Berlin. I did, however, add some changes.

I reinforced the entire pencil case with Décovil to make it more stabil.
Luckily the only part you need to turn is the flap, so using the thick Décovil was not a problem.

I slightly changed the shape of the flap…

The main change I made was to the zipper. According to the instructions I should have organized a 110cm long zipper, then used only one side of it, sewn it once around the whole case and only sewn it in at the bottom. Instead I decided to use an entire 60cm zipper, sew it in at the top and leave a part of it standing out at the bottom, making it easier to hold on to and pull at when closing the pencil case…

My little employer was so happy about his new pencil case, he actually had to shed a few tears on his first day of kindergarten, because he had to leave it there. But he’s still got the big version at home 😉

Ab damit zum Creadienstag und zu Kiddikram!
