Behind the Scenes: Parasaurolophus

My son enjoys sewing.
So far he’s sewn a pillow and blanket for his favorite softie and a bunting with his name on it – which reminds me that I’ve actually withheld that from you so far (shame on me!). It was a three-day project, because he insisted on doing the appliqués all by himself… but I’ll tell you about that when I show you the bunting 😉

So, anyways: my son came up with a new idea of what he felt like sewing next: a stuffed animal!
Ah, excellent! That made mommy really happy! Mommy loves making softies!!!….

However, when it comes to sewing softies, said boy and his mommy appear to be more alike than mommy was expecting… he, of course, did NOT want to sew one we already had a pattern for – NO! It had to be one that NOBODY has yet! Mommy should make a pattern with him! Ha!
– „oh, ok. Sure, sweetie. We can do that“, I said, unsuspectingly.
I was thinking of something like: he draws up a (rather simple) animal, we cut it out in double fabric layer, maybe appliqué a face or something, sew along the outlines, stuff it.. done!
Yeah, right!
THAT would only make a pillow, said he.
…he does have a point…

Tja. Und was sollte es werden? Hund, Katze, Schildkröte??
Wieder falsch, Mommy. EIN DINOSAURIER.
und NEIN, nicht irgendein unspezifischer Dino.
Ein PARASAUROLOPHUS! – Is klar. kein Thema. Danke für das konkrete Briefing. 😀

And what animal does my son want? A Dog, cat, tortoise??
Wrong again, mommy!: A DINOSAUR.

an – NO – not just any unspecific dino.
A PARASAUROLOPHUS!
-uhm, yeah. Sure thing. thanks for the concrete briefing. 😀

So I drafted one (or two or three) up, which resulted in this prototype:

The pattern is done and my son is sewing (in waves, for days).
I’ll show you the „real“ Parasaurolophus as soon as it’s done.
At a sewing speed of one stitch per second,, making a dino that’s 45cm tall and about 60cm long and that comes with individually sewn extremities, is, of course, a mammoth project.
I admire his ambition!

…and I’ll go and write some sewing instructions – I’m sure there’s more little dino-fans out there 🙂
