My kids love their fidget spinners – as most kids currently do.
They take them along wherever they go. But what if you happen to need your little hands for something else for a sec?
That’s when you realize you need a pocket for your fidget spinner!

My son has been bugging me for weeks to pleeeaase be allowed to sew something again sometime. So we declared this our next project.
It’s a perfect, quick little sewing project for kids who have made their first sewing experiences (e.G. making a pillow/blankie for their dolls or stuffed animals, or sewing a bunting), and those who want to work on their curve sewing skills.
These fidget spinner pockets also make an excellent (quick / last-minute) present – and I imagine they would make a nice little colouring project for a birthday party, too.

I chose to use SnapPap as the main material for our fidget spinner pocket because it’s a lot easier to handle than leather, for example, while still making sturdy, durable pockets. And also, because there are loads of ways to pretty it up in the end.

This one was covered in hearts by the little madame and myself, using fine liners.

My son wanted a kind of mechanical drawing on the back of his pocket.
I sketched it on the pocket with a pencil first and traced the lines with a ball point pen then.
Alternatively, you could use your cutting machine to cut out a design from vinyl or heat transfer material and put that on the snapPap. Stamping with ink also works well on this material and I think that would make a nice additional option to coloring it at a birthday party.

On my son’s pocket we used transparent sheet for the front, so you can see the fancy spinner in the pocket.

Plastic folders are great for this purpose. Using the colorful side of a plastic folder might also be a nice option. I’m sure we’ll try that out on one of our next pockets. Monsieur is so obsessed with this project and the idea of sewing some for all his friends now, that I’m sure I will be able to show you more examples very soon 😀

For those of you who would like to make a fidget spinner pocket like this yourselves now (with or for your kids): Here’s a video tutorial (in German).
And you will find the written instructions and link to the free pattern underneath.

I hope you enjoy making these. Let me see your pockets and tag mommymade on facebook or instagram!

You will need:
– a piece of SnapPap (approx 10x20cm)
– a snap (a second one is optional) and pliers to attach the snap with
– optional: a key ring with a mini-carabiner
– optional: clear or colorful foil from an old plastic folder
– the fidget spinner you’re making a pocket for, in order to be able to make a pattern from it, plus a ruler
– alternatively: this mommymade FREE PATTERN for private use only
– a pencil, scissors, yarn & your sewing machine

If you want to make your own pattern (I cannot guarantee my pattern will fit all spinners out there), trace the outlines of your spinner.
Then draw an additional outline approx 1cm outside the shape you just traced. This will be your pattern.

For the back of your fidget spinner case, add a strap to your pattern at the top center, approx 1cm wide and 6,5cm long.
Then trace the pattern (your own or the mommymade free pattern) to the SnapPap and cut it out without any extra seam allowance.
For the front of your pocket, fold the top of your pattern downwards, so the two round shapes at the top are halved (dashed line in the mommymade pattern).Ihr solltet dann diese Form erhalten:
You should end up with this shape:

Cut this new shape out of your snapPap, or, if desired, our of a plastic folder.

Place the front and back of your pocket on top of each other, secure with clips and stich together, close to the edge (2-3mm from edge).
I like giving the SnapPap its typical leathery look by scrunching it up before sewing, but you can still do that in the end, too.
Also, you can design your pocket sides individually now (before sewing) or once your pocket is done. That, too, is up to you.
Now all we’ll take care of that strap.
Place it on the front of your pocket, where you want it to close…
Grab a snap cap and press it firmly onto where you later want the snap to be. This will leave a mark not only on the strap, but also on the front of your pocket.
At this mark, place the snap cap from the inside (!) of the pocket so the pointy end sticks out the front) and attach the socket.
Now all that’s missing is the counterpart of this snap.
Place cap and stud on your pocket’s strap.
You fidget spinner case is now finished an ready for you and/or your kids to start decorating it!
If you want to be able to carry this case on a key chain or key ring, I’d strongly advise adding another seam or snap in the place indicated in the following picture. This will ensure your pocket & spinner don’t go rushing toward the ground as soon as you open the strap 😉

Nochmals:

Again:
I hope you enjoy making these. Let me see your pockets and tag mommymade on facebook or instagram!
